Videography Tips

At the onset of the wedding planning process, it is advisable to formulate a “wish-list” of desired services for your special day. If possible, with pen and paper, separate the items of preparation (i.e. bridal gown, reception hall, and honeymoon) from expenses/services for capturing your memories (i.e. video, photography, heirlooms). More than likely, an imbalance will exist. Now you can choose what you would like, and budget accordingly. Typically, video services are 5% to 7% of the wedding budget, and cost around $800-$1,000 (approximately half of photographic services).

It is an increasing trend in the wedding industry for brides/grooms to pass the responsibility of videography to a family member with a hand-held camcorder. To save money, this is certainly an option, but one that will warrant several mediocre results, and thus, the reason that it is advisable to select several services and have them done well (by a professional), instead of an average or inadequate array of all the wedding services.

If professional videography is important to you as an integral part of preserving your wedding memories, feeling comfortable with the person whom you choose (both bride and groom) is most important. Be sure to schedule an in-person meeting to gauge the type of person you’ll be working with. Moreover, it is important to select a videographer who understands the importance of customizing his/her special skills to meet your needs, wants, and desires. Finally, before selecting someone, be weary of complicated legal contracts and payment arrangements.

Items to be addressed concerning the direction of your wedding video include experienced advice, back-up equipment, wireless microphones, lighting, and shooting philosophy. Selecting an established studio complete with references and samples of work to see is a preferred method to alleviate concerns. In addition, you may find it helpful to invite the videographer to your rehearsal dinner to discuss shooting strategy. This is a good test to find out how knowledgeable your videographer is. An experienced professional understands that this is an essential element to success, and will probably ask you if you object. This is also a chance to meet all the actors/actresses and supporting cast of your film, discuss the amount of privacy you would like during the ceremony/reception, and formulate an overall communication plan for capturing your special day on film.

During the reception, the DJ and Photographer will set the tempo for the event in conjunction with the reception facility. A good videographer understands the importance of maintaining a perfect balance of lighting to shoot a great video and maintain the mood. This should be addressed with the reception hall and DJ prior to your wedding day. An understanding of lighting concepts is the main hurdle that most amateurs cannot overcome, and one that generally determines a successful video. If the lights are too bright, mood will suffer. Likewise if the lights are too dark, the video will not be visible. Lowering the floor lights to about half, and adding fill light as needed is one way to create the right balance. In addition, halogen-dispersed lighting creates a soft broad beam with excellent results.

Most studies show that couples remember 25%-30% of their wedding day. Photography preserves the candid aspects through stunning shots. Video is an “action” keepsake to forever share with your children and grandchildren. Editing/Final cut is the procedure that creates the final product, resulting in a smooth polished document for you to treasure forever. During the editing process, you may wish to view the uncut footage and offer your suggestions. Once you have received your final copy of your special day, make sure that your videographer keeps a copy on file.
